Spain absolutely loves a fiesta in all its varied forms, and that includes plenty wave riding get-togethers. Don't miss a fun-packed weekend of soul surfing, music & sangria this weekend in Liencres, Cantabria!

Spain absolutely loves a fiesta in all its varied forms, so it comes as no surprise that summer surf shindigs are pretty damn popular too along the Iberian peninsula’s shores. This weekend the Cantabrian festival Cosmic Children Festival will celebrate its eighth edition with a special tribute to the legends of the national and international surf scene. Mucha fiesta!

The Cosmic Children Festival represents the past, present and future of surfing at all levels where historic figures and charismatic characters meet with professional surfers from Spain as well as some international figures and promising young surfers.

On the 15 and 16 of June, the site of Valdeareanas beach, in Liencres (Piélagos) will once again host this mythical meeting of pioneers, renowned surfers and fans of retro surf. Three generations of surfing legends from all over the country are again booked in for the cosmic weekend.

The Cosmic Children Festival is the key event for people passionate for the surfing beach culture and for everyone who wants to be part of a weekend brimming with soul-surfing, live music and beach art with loads of activities and impregnated with good vibes!

The environmental part constitutes one of the main highlights and the underlying message of the festival. The location of the Valdearenas beach, framed by the Dunas de Liencres Natural Park, emphasises the organisation’s ecological efforts. Surfrider Foundation Europe will also be present at the event and ensure the protection and promotion of the coast environment.

More details and the complete programme activities of the Cosmic Children Festival 2013, registrations for the beach festival and ticket sale for the concerts held at Escenario Santander will be available on the event’s website www.cosmicchildren.com.

On the Cover: Nic von Rupp, Java by Alex Laurel

The first Surf Europe issue of 2013 hits the shelves later this week! If you are thinking about dipping a toe in foreign drink somewhere in the world, why not have a peep inside first? Destinations featured include the very fine and righteous surfing grounds of France, Spain, Portugal, England, Canary Isles, Morocco, Maldives, Bali, Java, Brazil, Central America and the Caribbean. How, when, why, what board, who with, what for who to try and mate with… all these pertinent questions answered! There’s also advise on how to travel solo, get along as an unlocal, figure out a new break, even tubular troubleshooting. AND we launch the SE Reader Photog competition where one lucky reader will snag £2500 of surf gear! Yup, two-and-a-half grizzle! Who doesn’t love that?

p.s. It’s got a new bigger badder logo too, dig?

This all-time Mundaka session goes back a while, to around October 2010 if we rightly recall. Surf Europe was down in Peniche for the Rip Curl Pro Search, watching the event site get washed out to sea due to a massive storm surge. Remember that? Anyway, whether you were there or kooked it like us, this mesmerising footage of Urdaibai river-mouth magic sure is worth another peep.

Reunion Island’s Maxime Huscenot lines up for his healthy helping of backhand tube riding this last December at The Dark Eye:

“I think this must have been the day after everyone paddled into Belharra in mid-December. It was a solid 6ft Mundaka and some of the bigger sets were washing through. This was on the inside where some of the waves were barreling. I was there with Alain Riou and my friend Hugo! It was cool session as there were probably less then 20 people in the line up. The Acero’s brother were there, a few cool locals and Dane Gudauskas too. It was a fun session. I really love it down there. It’s such an incredible wave.” Maxime Huscenot.
