NIC VON RUPP MAKES INNERSECTION 2012 DVD RELEASE

Innersection has just announced the qualifiers for their 2012 surf video contest who will feature in their next DVD release Innersection Black. Of the 12 available spots Portugal’s Nicolau von Rupp secured himself a spot as the only European in the mix. If you haven’t checked his standout section you probably should:

While we’re not sure what happened to this year’s first place and the 100 Gs Innersection used to give away, last year’s winner Albee Layer is supposed to have a killer section in the final DVD release (the others you can still all watch online, be it in pretty horrible pixelated Youtube definition).

Nicolaus von Rupp is one of the best surfers in the world, or at least Praia Grande. He’s a great guy too and thoroughly handsome, smart and articulate. He speaks twelve languages and does a lot of work for charity. But aside from all that, his innersection clip is pretty sick, check it:

Tofino’s Pete Devries continues to submit awesome video parts to Taylor Steele’s Innersection contest every year despite the frigid and fickle shred conditions off the majestic west coast of Canada, and to prove that it is now possible to stomp even the most gymnastic aerial manoeuvres clad in 6 mil of rubber.

Innersection 2012 has been officially underway since the beginning of July. Surfer/filmmakers teams have only July and August to load their sections onto the website before the contest period ends and the voting begins. Coming at it from a different angle, this submission of Australia’s Sandy Ryan was filmed entirely at Shipsterns and powered purely by his own two arms. Ok, so there aren’t too many air reverses in there but is that a bad thing?

Albee Layer Wins Innersection 2012, Jamie O’Brien takes 2nd

Maui’s Albee Layer has won this year’s Innersection ‘Section of the Year’ and the 100 Gs that come with it. Runner up went to Jamie O’Brien. If you haven’t yet seen their sections then here they are.

The arrival of Taylor Steele’s Innersection comp (and their 1st place $100,000 prize money) sure put a firecracker up a lot of the world’s lesser known “soul” surfers’ asses to get their video act together and start producing film-worthy parts for the world wide web. Coupled with the latest developements and increased accessibility of digital video technology, the quality of footage on the Internet sure has risen sharply over the last couple of years. Here Uruguay’s Marco Giorgi and Australia’s Shaun Cansdell are two good examples of what we’re talking about.

Tim Boydell’s First Swell

Shot by 26-year-old Tim Boydell (who also put together Reubyn Ash’s 2011 winning Innersection video part), ‘First Swell’ was screened at last year’s London Film Festival and documents the English crew of Tom Lowe, Tom Butler, Mitch Corbett, Mark Harris and Josh Hughes as they set out towards the British Isles’ most remote fringes in search of undiscovered world-class breaks. The crew spent 6 weeks searching every nook and headland for new lineups. In the end, they only scored 2 days of swell but the reward was a handsome one, the discovery of Evies, and unknown righthand slab.

With plans to return as soon as possible, it shouldn’t be long before you seen more footage of the UK’s most recent closest kept secret.
